Both hips, dorsal view

Congenital hip dysplasia

Site: King Alfred Place (Hyde Abbey cemetery), Winchester.
Period: Late medieval?
Excavator: Winchester Museums Service.
Published: forthcoming.
Skeleton: child, c.11-12 years.

Catalogue entry: Evidence for dislocation of both femoral heads, with false acetabuli on the dorsal surfaces of both ilia. The pelvis was slightly deformed. The right femoral head was flattened, the left fragmentary, but the neck and metaphysis were distorted. The left femoral shaft was thinner. The right femoral capital epiphysis may have slipped as a result of the dislocation. It was thicker at the superior edge than the inferior. The bilateral nature of these lesions suggests congenital hip dysplasia.
