Inside Castle Rising Castle 2

This doorway, with its brick arch and jambs, at the base of the Great Staircase was inserted to give access into the basement during the Tudor rebuilding work.

inserted fireplace

This oven and fireplace, with a floor made of tiles set on end, had been inserted into an earlier turret or spiral staircase in one corner of the kitchen. The original kitchen for the castle would have been in a separate building outside the keep.

Beanie Z points out some decorative stone in the form of knotwork.

tile and mortar floor

This is a tile and mortar floor in one of the upper rooms of the keep, again a later insertion. It is made of large Flemish floor tiles of 14th-15th century date, and smaller medieval floor tiles, set in lime mortar which has scored patterns in its surface.
